At a glance
- Elastics hook between the upper and lower teeth to help correct the way your teeth bite together.
- They can be used with fixed braces or with clear aligners.
- Wear them exactly as your orthodontist shows you, and change them as often as advised so the pull stays consistent.
- Consistency matters: missing days can make treatment take longer.
- Teeth may feel sore for the first few days. Carry spare elastics with you.
Making elastics work for you
Elastics do much of the work of correcting your bite, but only when they are worn. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek explains how they work, how to put them on and how to remember to wear them.
Your orthodontist will show you exactly where they go and how often to change them. If you run out, or are unsure of the pattern, contact the practice rather than guessing.
AddaSmile clear aligners
AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.
Find out about AddaSmileYour questions answered
How often do elastics need changing?
Elastics lose their stretch, so they are usually changed several times a day. Follow your orthodontist's instructions.
Should I remove elastics to eat?
Usually, yes, unless your orthodontist says otherwise. Put fresh ones in straight after eating and brushing.
What if I forget to wear my elastics?
Treatment can take longer if elastics are not worn as advised. If you are finding it hard, tell your orthodontist so you can find a routine that works.
