Power chains on braces: their purpose and how they feel

At a glance

  • A power chain is a row of linked elastic rings connecting several brackets.
  • It is mostly used to close gaps and move teeth along the arch.
  • Most people feel pressure or tightness for a few days after a new chain; this usually settles.
  • Soft foods, orthodontic wax and your usual pain relief, if suitable for you, can help in the first few days.
  • Power chains stretch and weaken over time, so they are normally replaced at adjustment visits.

What power chains do

Power chains are a common part of treatment with fixed braces. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek explains what they are for, how they are fitted and what they usually feel like.

They come in the same colours as standard ties, so you can still choose your look. If a chain breaks or comes off between visits, let the practice know so we can check whether it needs replacing before your next appointment.

Your questions answered

Are power chains painful?
