Loose or broken brace bracket: what to do

At a glance

  • A loose or broken bracket is common and is not usually an emergency, but let the practice know so we can arrange a repair.
  • If the bracket is still on the wire, leave it where it is.
  • If it rubs your lip or cheek, cover it with orthodontic wax.
  • If it comes off completely, keep it and bring it to your appointment.
  • Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods, a frequent cause of breakages.

Handling a broken bracket

Brackets can come loose from biting something hard or sticky, and occasionally for no obvious reason. In this short video, Dr Sarah Sadek explains what to do right away and when to call us.

Leaving a loose bracket for a long time can slow treatment, so it is worth having it repaired. If you are in severe pain, have swelling or have injured your mouth, get advice promptly.

Your questions answered

Is a loose bracket an emergency?

Usually not, but call the practice so we can book a repair. If you have severe pain, swelling or an injury, get advice promptly.

Can I stick a bracket back on myself?

No. Do not use household glue or try to reattach it. Leave it in place, use orthodontic wax if it rubs and contact the practice.

What makes brackets break?

Most breakages come from hard, sticky or chewy foods, or habits such as chewing pens. Cutting food into smaller pieces helps.
