Braces problems: simple fixes until your appointment

At a glance

  • Most braces problems, such as a loose bracket, a poking wire or a missing tie, are not emergencies, but call the practice so we can advise you.
  • Orthodontic wax is the most useful thing to keep at home, as it covers anything that rubs.
  • Do not cut wires or try to glue anything back yourself.
  • For soreness, soft foods, warm salt-water rinses and your usual pain relief, if suitable for you, can help.
  • If you have injured your face or mouth, have swelling or are in severe pain, get urgent care.

Staying comfortable between appointments

Braces occasionally break or rub between visits. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek goes through the most common problems and simple, safe fixes you can use at home until you are seen.

Keep a small kit with orthodontic wax, a few interdental brushes and spare elastics if you use them. Tell us about any breakage, even if it is not bothering you, as it can affect how your teeth move.

Your questions answered

What is a genuine braces emergency?

An injury to the face or mouth, swelling, infection or severe pain. Most other problems, such as a loose bracket or poking wire, can wait for a repair visit, but call us for advice.

What should I keep at home in case of braces problems?

Orthodontic wax, interdental brushes, a small mirror and spare elastics if you wear them.

Should I keep my adjustment appointment if something is broken?

Yes, but let the practice know beforehand so enough time is booked for the repair.
