Fast relief from a poking wire
A long wire is one of the most common braces problems and is usually simple to fix. In this short video, Dr Sarah Sadek shows easy ways to stay comfortable until you can see your orthodontist.
Warm salt-water rinses can soothe a sore spot in the cheek. If the wire has caused a cut that is not healing, or you are in a lot of pain, contact the practice sooner.
Your questions answered
Should I cut a poking wire myself?
We advise against it unless your orthodontist has shown you how. Use orthodontic wax and contact the practice so we can trim it safely.
Why does my wire keep sticking out?
As teeth straighten and gaps close, the wire can slide along and stick out at the back. This is common and usually needs a quick trim.
Does a poking wire count as an emergency?
Usually not, though it can be uncomfortable. Use wax and call the practice to arrange a short appointment.
