At a glance
- Retainers help stop teeth moving back after braces or aligners, and most people need them long term.
- Clear removable retainers are discreet and comfortable but can wear or crack over time.
- Wire-and-acrylic (Hawley) retainers are durable and adjustable, but more visible.
- Fixed (bonded) retainers are a thin wire glued behind the front teeth. They work around the clock but need careful cleaning.
- Many people have both a fixed and a removable retainer. Your orthodontist will recommend what suits your teeth.
Choosing your retainer
Straightening teeth is half the job; keeping them straight is the other half. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek compares the main types of retainers, with the pros and cons of each.
The right choice depends on how your teeth moved, how likely they are to relapse and what you will wear reliably. Whichever type you have, regular check-ups catch wear or damage early.
AddaSmile clear aligners
AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.

How long will I need to wear a retainer?
For most people, long term. Many orthodontists advise wearing removable retainers at night indefinitely after the first phase. Follow the plan your orthodontist gives you.
What if I lose or break my retainer?
Contact the practice as soon as you can. Teeth can start to shift within days or weeks without a retainer, so arrange a replacement quickly.
Is toothpaste OK for cleaning retainers?
Toothpaste can be abrasive and may scratch clear retainers, making them cloudy. A soft brush with cool water or a retainer cleaning tablet is usually a better choice. Ask us what suits your retainer.
