Having your braces removed: what to expect

At a glance

  • Brackets are gently released and removed with a special instrument.
  • Any remaining adhesive is polished away.
  • If they have not already been made, scans or impressions are taken for your retainers.
  • Retainers are fitted, sometimes on the same day, and we show you how to wear and clean them.
  • Teeth may feel slightly sensitive for a short while afterwards.

Removal day

The day your braces come off is a big milestone. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shows what happens at a removal appointment, often called a debond.

The most important part of the appointment is starting your retainers. Teeth naturally tend to move back after treatment, so wearing retainers as advised protects your new smile.

Your questions answered

Is having braces taken off uncomfortable?

Most people feel pressure rather than pain as the brackets come off. Teeth may feel a little sensitive afterwards.

Will my teeth look different straight away?

Teeth can look slightly dull until all the adhesive is polished off, and gums may be a little puffy for a few days. This usually settles.

How soon can I whiten after braces?

Ask your dentist. Many people wait a few weeks after removal before whitening.
