Putting in and taking out your retainers: a how-to

At a glance

  • Line your retainer up with your teeth and press it into place with your fingertips.
  • Avoid biting it into place, as this can crack or bend it.
  • To take it out, ease it away from the back teeth on both sides rather than pulling at the front.
  • Clean it daily and keep it in its case whenever it is out of your mouth.
  • Keep it away from heat, such as hot water or a car dashboard in the sun, which can distort it.

Good retainer habits

Retainers last longer and work better when they are handled with care. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek demonstrates the right way to put retainers in and take them out, with tips to avoid damage.

A retainer that starts to feel tight can be a sign your teeth have begun to move. Keep wearing it as advised and contact SW3 Dental if it does not fit properly.

AddaSmile clear aligners

AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.
