Why choose an implant for one missing tooth?

For many adults, a single implant is the most conservative way to replace a lost tooth. Unlike a conventional bridge, it does not rely on the teeth next to the gap, and unlike a denture it is fixed. The implant replaces the root, the crown replaces the visible tooth, and you clean it as you would your own teeth.

How the options compare

Single implant

Fixed, stands alone, supports the bone where the tooth was lost. Requires a healing period and a short surgical step.

From £2,750

Bridge

Fixed and quicker to complete, but usually involves shaping the teeth either side to hold the bridge.

Partial denture

The simplest and least invasive option to start with, but removable and less stable when eating.

Your implant journey

  1. Consultation
A relaxed conversation about the gap, your expectations and timing, with an examination and an explanation of costs.
  2. 3D scan and plan
A CBCT scan shows the bone in three dimensions so the implant can be positioned precisely and any need for grafting identified early.
  3. Implant placement
Carried out under local anaesthetic. For a front tooth, a temporary is usually planned so you are not left with a visible gap.
  4. Your final crown
Once the implant has bonded with the bone, usually after a few months, a crown is made to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth.

Myth or fact?

"Implants are only for older people." Myth. Implants are used for adults of all ages once the jaw has finished growing; tooth loss through sport, accidents or a cracked tooth is common in younger adults too.

"You can tell an implant from a natural tooth." Not usually. A well-matched crown blends in with the teeth around it.

"Implants never need any care." Myth. They need the same daily cleaning and regular check-ups as natural teeth to stay healthy.

Common questions

How much does a single implant cost at SW3 Dental?

A single implant with its crown starts from £2,750. After your consultation and scan you receive a written, itemised quote. 0% finance through Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Does the procedure hurt?

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness afterwards is normal and usually settles within a few days. We do not offer sedation.

How long does it take from start to finish?

Usually a few months, mainly to allow the implant to bond with the bone before the final crown is fitted.

Can the tooth be replaced on the same day it is removed?

Sometimes, depending on the bone and the position of the tooth. Your scan helps decide whether that is sensible for you.

How long will an implant last?

With good daily cleaning and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years. The crown may need replacing at some point, as with any crown.
