What is an implant-retained denture?

An implant-retained denture (also called an overdenture) has small attachments on its fitting surface that clip onto implants in the jaw. It feels far more secure than a conventional denture, yet you can still remove it each evening to clean it. For a lower denture in particular, even two implants can transform how stable it feels.

Which option suits whom?

Clip-on overdenture

Suits people who are happy with a removable denture but want it to stop moving. Fewer implants and a lower investment than a fixed arch.

Quoted individually

Fixed full arch (All-on-4)

Suits people who want teeth that stay in and feel closer to natural teeth. Only your dentist removes the bridge.

From £6,495 per arch

Upgrading your current denture

Sometimes an existing, well-fitting denture can be adapted to clip onto implants. We will tell you honestly whether this is realistic.

How treatment works

  1. Consultation
We listen to what bothers you about your denture, examine your mouth and explain your options and costs.
  2. 3D scan and plan
A CBCT scan shows the bone so the implants can be placed where they will give the most support.
  3. Implant placement
Under local anaesthetic. You normally continue wearing a denture while the implants heal.
  4. Attachments fitted
Once the implants have bonded with the bone, usually after a few months, the clips are fitted and your denture is secured.

Myth or fact?

"I've worn dentures too long for implants." Not necessarily. Bone can shrink after tooth loss, but a 3D scan shows what is possible, and angled implants or grafting can often help.

"An implant denture is the same as a fixed bridge." Myth. An overdenture still comes out for cleaning; a fixed arch such as All-on-4 does not.

"I'm too old." Age alone is rarely the deciding factor. General health, bone and the ability to keep the area clean matter more.

Common questions

How many implants are needed?

Often two to four for a lower denture and four or more for an upper denture. Your scan and examination decide what is right for you.

Will it stop my denture rubbing?

Most people find it moves far less, which reduces rubbing and sore spots. Many no longer need adhesive.

Does it hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness afterwards is normal. We do not offer sedation.

How do I look after it?

Remove and clean the denture daily, brush around the attachments and keep up regular check-ups and hygiene visits. The clips wear gradually and are replaced as routine maintenance.

Is finance available?

Yes. 0% finance through Tabeo is available on implants, subject to status.
