Restoring a full arch is rarely only about appearance. It is about how secure your teeth feel at dinner, how you speak, how much of your mouth is covered by a plate and how much maintenance you are comfortable with. A conventional denture, an implant overdenture and an All-on-4 fixed bridge answer those questions differently. Understanding the trade-offs before your consultation tends to make the conversation more productive.
A lower jaw, side view: a denture supported by the gum alone; an overdenture held by attachments on implants; and an All-on-4 bridge fixed to four implants, the back two placed at an angle. Illustration only.
| Conventional denture | Implant overdenture | All-on-4 bridge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| In place or removable | Removable; relies on fit, suction and sometimes adhesive | Removable; attachments hold it securely | Fixed; removed only by your dentist at reviews |
| Maintenance | Removed and cleaned daily | Removed daily; attachments cleaned and clips renewed over time | Cleaned in place, including beneath the bridge, with professional hygiene visits |
| Palate coverage (upper) | Typically full | Sometimes reduced | None |
| Implants | None | Commonly 2–4 lower; usually more upper | Four per arch |
| Investment | Lowest; quoted individually | Quoted individually | From £6,495 per arch |

From £6,495 per arch"An overdenture and All-on-4 are essentially the same." Myth. Both use implants, but an overdenture is removed by you each day; an All-on-4 bridge is fixed.
"Dentures stop the jawbone shrinking." Myth. Bone can gradually recede after teeth are lost, and a denture resting on the gum does not prevent it. Implants place load back into the bone.
"With All-on-4, there is nothing to maintain." Myth. A fixed bridge needs careful daily cleaning beneath it and regular professional reviews.
"Angled implants can help when bone is limited." Fact. Tilting the back two implants in All-on-4 often allows them to use the bone that is available. If more bone is needed, we explain the options, which may include grafting, and include it in your written quote.
A conventional lower denture may shift with firmer foods. An overdenture resists lifting, and a fixed bridge allows a broader range of foods once healing is complete, although it is still wise to take care with very hard items.
Varies by optionDentures and overdentures are removed, cleaned and usually left out overnight. A fixed bridge stays in, so the routine is brushing in place and cleaning beneath it with interdental brushes or a water flosser.
Daily routineDentures are relined or remade as the gums change; overdenture clips are renewed periodically; a fixed bridge is reviewed and professionally cleaned, and may need repair or replacement in time.

Sometimes, depending on the number and position of the implants and the bone available. It is worth mentioning at your consultation if you think you may want this in future.
There may be a short period of adjustment with any new teeth. Because All-on-4 has no plate across the palate, many people find it feels less bulky than a denture.
Most people find it noticeably steadier, because the attachments stop it lifting and sliding when eating and speaking.
We plan to avoid you being without teeth at any stage, using a denture or a temporary fixed bridge during healing.
