Gum disease stages explained

At a glance

  • Gum disease begins as gingivitis: red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush.
  • Gingivitis can usually be reversed with good daily cleaning and regular hygiene appointments.
  • If it progresses to periodontitis, the bone and tissues that support the teeth are affected.
  • Signs include receding gums, bad breath, new gaps between teeth and loose teeth.
  • Bone lost through periodontitis cannot usually be regained, but treatment can help stop it getting worse.

How gum disease progresses

Gum disease is very common and often causes no discomfort in the early stages, so it can go unnoticed. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek explains each stage of gum disease and the warning signs to watch for.

Regular check-ups and hygiene visits help pick up problems early. If you are concerned about your gums, our Chelsea team can assess them and explain gum disease treatment.

Your questions answered

Is gum disease reversible?

Gingivitis, the early stage, can usually be reversed with good cleaning. Advanced gum disease cannot usually be reversed, but treatment can help stop it progressing.

What are the first signs of gum disease?

Gums that bleed when you brush, look red or puffy, or feel tender. Bad breath can also be a sign.

Can gum disease affect braces or aligner treatment?

Gums must be healthy before and during orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist will check them and may arrange hygiene care first.
