At a glance
- Interdental brushes clean between the teeth, where a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Pick a size that fits snugly without forcing; different gaps may need different sizes.
- Insert the brush gently and move it in and out a few times, without forcing or twisting.
- Use them once a day, and replace them when the bristles splay or the wire bends.
- A little bleeding is common at first. If it continues after a couple of weeks, see your dentist or hygienist.
Cleaning in between
Plaque between the teeth is a common cause of gum problems and decay. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shows how to choose and use interdental brushes properly.
They are especially useful with braces, for cleaning around brackets and under the wire, and around bridges or fixed retainers. Our team can find the right sizes for you at a check-up or hygiene appointment.
Your questions answered
Which interdental brush size is right for me?
The right size fits snugly without forcing, and many people need two or three sizes. Your dentist or hygienist can check this for you.
Is some bleeding normal when I start?
Yes, a little bleeding is common at first and often settles as gums get healthier. If it lasts more than a couple of weeks, book a check-up.
Floss or interdental brushes: which should I use?
Both work. Interdental brushes are often easier for larger gaps and around braces, while floss can suit very tight contacts. Ask your hygienist what suits you.
