Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?

At a glance

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing is often a sign of gum inflammation (gingivitis) caused by plaque.
  • Keep brushing. Gentle, thorough cleaning along the gum line usually helps.
  • Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes.
  • Smoking and some medical conditions can affect the gums.
  • If bleeding continues for more than a couple of weeks, or your gums are sore or swollen, book a check-up.

What bleeding gums mean

Bleeding gums are very common and are a sign your gums need some attention. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek explains why gums bleed and what you can do at home.

Gingivitis can usually be reversed with good cleaning and professional hygiene visits. Left untreated, it can progress to gum disease that affects the bone around the teeth, so it is worth having it checked at our Chelsea practice.

Your questions answered

Should I stop brushing when my gums bleed?

No. Keep brushing gently but thoroughly along the gum line and clean between your teeth. Bleeding often reduces as the gums become healthier.

How soon will bleeding gums improve?

With good daily cleaning, many people see an improvement within a couple of weeks. If not, see your dentist or hygienist.

Can braces cause bleeding gums?

Braces make cleaning harder, so plaque can collect around the brackets and cause bleeding. Interdental brushes and careful brushing help.
