An implant is not rushed, and for good reason. The titanium post needs time to integrate with the jawbone before it can carry a crown, bridge or denture. The appointments themselves are relatively few; the months in between are largely about biology doing its work. Knowing the sequence in advance makes it straightforward to fit treatment around travel, work and social plans.
An outline of the six stages of implant care. The interval between placement and the final restoration is usually a few months, and a temporary tooth can be made where needed. Illustration only.
Mild tenderness, some swelling and occasionally a little bruising, generally easing over a few days. Everyday painkillers, taken as directed, are usually enough.
Soft, lukewarm food for a few days, chewing on the opposite side. Wait until the numbness has fully worn off before hot drinks.
Continue brushing the rest of your mouth and follow our advice on gentle rinsing around the site, often warm salt water from the following day.
Postpone strenuous training for a couple of days. Smoking and alcohol can slow healing, so it is wise to avoid them while the area settles.
If bleeding persists, swelling increases after the first few days, or you feel unwell, telephone the practice on 020 3474 6302.
Most people are back at work the day after the implant is placed. If you have an important presentation or a social event, it is sensible to leave a day or two of breathing space, as swelling can be more noticeable on the second day. Short-haul travel is rarely a problem once the first few days have passed, though we recommend mentioning any trips at your consultation so appointments can be sequenced around them.
"Implant treatment means weeks off work." Myth. Because treatment uses local anaesthetic, most people return to their normal routine the next day.
"You will be left with a gap for months." Not necessarily. Where a gap would show, a temporary tooth is usually provided during healing.
"Every case follows the same timetable." Myth. Extractions, bone volume, smoking, diabetes and gum health can all influence timing and suitability, which is why each plan is individual. If extra bone is needed, we explain the options, which may include grafting, and include it in your written quote.

For a single tooth, typically a consultation, a scan, placement, a healing review, records for the crown and a fitting appointment, then routine maintenance. Your plan lists each stage in advance.
Occasionally, if the bone and the position of the tooth allow it. Often it is better to let the socket heal first. Your scan informs this decision.
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness afterwards is expected. We do not offer sedation.
