60-second answer · Braces

Are braces really “tightened”?

At a glance

  • People talk about braces being “tightened”, but adjustments are really about changing the wire and ties so teeth keep moving as planned.
  • As treatment progresses, wires are replaced with slightly firmer or differently shaped ones.
  • Coloured ties, power chain or elastics may be changed at the same appointment.
  • Teeth can feel tender for a day or two afterwards; this normally settles quickly.
  • Attending every adjustment helps treatment finish on schedule.

What really happens at an adjustment

In this 60-second clip Dr Sarah explains why “tightening” is a misleading description. At each visit your orthodontist reviews progress and changes the parts that guide your teeth, rather than simply making the braces tighter.
