60-second answer · Retainers

The retainer mistake that could undo your treatment

At a glance

  • Retainers keep teeth straight once braces or aligners are finished.
  • If a retainer is lost, damaged or not worn, teeth can drift back and may need further treatment.
  • When a removable retainer is out of your mouth, keep it in its case, never wrapped in a napkin or tissue.
  • Keep it away from heat and pets, and clean it gently in cool water.
  • If a retainer is lost, broken or stops fitting, contact us quickly, before the teeth start to move.

Looking after your result

Straight teeth are an investment, and retainers protect it. This very short clip highlights a mistake we see often, and how easy it is to avoid.

If you need a replacement retainer or are unsure how to wear yours, the team at SW3 Dental on the King's Road can help.

Your questions answered

I have lost my retainer. What now?

Contact us as soon as you can so we can arrange a replacement before your teeth start to move.

How long should I keep wearing my retainer?

Long-term wear is usually advised. Your orthodontist will tell you how often for your own treatment.

Can I rinse my retainer in hot water?

No. Hot water can warp clear retainers. Use cool water and a soft brush instead.
