60-second answer · Braces

Brace colour combinations that go well together

At a glance

  • The colour comes from the small elastic ties around each bracket, which are usually replaced at every adjustment.
  • Two complementary colours often look better than lots of different shades.
  • Deeper shades such as navy or purple tend to make teeth look whiter.
  • Very pale or clear ties can pick up stains from coffee, tea and curry.
  • Many patients choose colours for a season, an event or a favourite team.

Choosing a look

This quick clip shows a few of Dr Sarah's favourite brace colour combinations, so you can come to your next appointment with an idea in mind.

The ties change every few weeks, so there are plenty of chances to try something new. Our longer video on choosing brace colours has more ideas.

Your questions answered

Can I pick new colours at each visit?

Usually, yes. The ties are replaced at most adjustments, so you can choose a fresh combination each time.

Which colours help teeth look whiter?

Darker shades such as navy, purple and dark green tend to make teeth look whiter than pale or clear ties.

Are coloured ties compulsory?

No. Clear and tooth-coloured ties are available too.
