How to keep teeth bright while you wear braces

At a glance

  • Whitening is usually done once braces come off, so the whole tooth surface lightens evenly.
  • Plaque left around brackets can cause white or brown marks on the enamel, so brush carefully around every bracket.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste twice a day, and a fluoride mouthwash if your dentist recommends one.
  • Cutting back on sugary snacks and staining drinks such as coffee, tea and cola helps keep teeth clean and bright.
  • Regular hygiene visits remove stains and build-up you cannot shift at home.

A bright smile during and after braces

Many people want a whiter smile when their braces come off. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shares practical tips for keeping teeth clean and bright during treatment and explains why timing matters for whitening.

Preventing marks in the first place makes the biggest difference: good cleaning, less sugar and regular check-ups. Once your braces are off, our Chelsea team can talk you through teeth whitening options.

AddaSmile clear aligners

AddaSmile is a more affordable clear aligner option, planned and overseen by our orthodontic team. Each plan includes an in-person 3D scan, whitening and retainers in one price. Ask about it at your free consultation.

Your questions answered

Can I whiten while my braces are on?

It is usually better to wait until your braces are removed, as whitening around brackets can leave uneven patches. Ask your orthodontist about timing.

What causes white spots after braces?

White marks are often early enamel damage from plaque sitting around the brackets. Thorough brushing and fluoride help prevent them. If you notice them, ask your dentist about options.

Do whitening toothpastes make a difference?

They can remove some surface staining but do little to change the natural colour of teeth. In the UK, professional whitening must be prescribed by a dental professional.
