Choosing your brace colours: tips from an orthodontist

At a glance

  • The colour on fixed braces comes from the small elastic ties (modules) around each bracket.
  • Ties are normally changed at each adjustment, so you can try a new look every few weeks.
  • Very light colours, including white and clear, can stain from foods such as curry, coffee and tomato sauce.
  • Think about school or work, upcoming events and photos, and colours that suit your skin tone.
  • Clear or tooth-coloured ties are available if you would like your braces to be less noticeable.

Colours you will enjoy

Picking colours is one of the fun parts of wearing braces. In this video, Dr Sarah Sadek shares tips on choosing shades that suit you, combining colours and avoiding ones that stain easily.

As the ties are replaced at each adjustment, nothing is permanent. Many patients choose seasonal or team colours, or a favourite combination, and change it next time.

Your questions answered

Can I have new brace colours at every appointment?

Usually, yes. The ties are normally replaced at each adjustment, so you can choose again each time.

Which colours show stains most?

Very light shades such as white and clear tend to show staining from curry, coffee and tomato sauce. Darker or mid-tone shades usually show it less.

Must I have coloured ties?

No. Clear or tooth-coloured ties are available. Ask at your appointment which options suit your braces.
